Frequently Asked Questions

The gin

What is Pícaro Gin?

Pícaro Gin is a Colombian Contemporary Dry Gin made in the Andean region of Colombia with eighteen botanicals, orchid and water from páramo springs. It is bottled at 40% ABV in a 700 ml presentation.

What kind of gin is Pícaro?

Pícaro is a Contemporary Dry Gin, with a dry profile, juniper as its structural layer and the spotlight on orchid and citrus from the Colombian Andean forest. Unlike a traditional London Dry, where juniper leads, here it holds the structure so the wider botanical world can come through.

What is a Contemporary Dry Gin?

It is the modern school of gin in which juniper moves from lead to structural support, leaving room for the botanicals that define each house. It keeps the dry profile of classic gin without juniper dominating it.

What makes Pícaro Gin different?

Three technical decisions. It is an orchid gin, a rare category worldwide. Its base water comes from páramo springs, an ecosystem found only in the tropical Andes. And each of its eighteen botanicals is distilled separately before blending, a method few houses practise.

What botanicals are in Pícaro Gin?

Pícaro contains eighteen botanicals, seven of which are public: juniper, orchid, grapefruit, mandarin lime, pink pepper, elderberries and coffee cherry. The remaining eleven are house reserve.

Does Pícaro Gin contain orchid?

Yes. Orchid is the floral and conceptual anchor of the spirit. It brings a floral note of defined, structured contour and refined character that carries the floral axis on the palate and the finish. Gins made with orchid are a rare category internationally.

What does Pícaro Gin taste like?

A citrus-floral axis over a juniper base, with spiced and herbal support. The nose opens with sharp grapefruit citrus and a subtle floral sweetness without sugar. The palate is silky and medium-bodied, closing with a gentle warmth and a long floral finish.

What is the ABV of Pícaro Gin?

40% ABV, in a 700 ml bottle.

How it is made

Where is Pícaro Gin produced?

In Colombia, high in the Andes. Its botanicals come from the Andean forest, from the páramo, the cloud forests and the tropical rainforest.

How is Pícaro Gin made?

It is distilled in copper stills, in 150-litre micro-batches, at Andean altitude. Each botanical is treated on its own, with cold maceration, steam infusion or short contact depending on what it calls for, and distilled individually before the distillates are blended in proportions set by the house.

What is Individualized Botanical Mastery (Maestría Botánica Individualizada)?

It is the technical signature of Pícaro Gin. Instead of macerating and distilling all botanicals together, as the traditional method does, each one is studied, extracted and distilled separately using the technique best suited to its character. The result reads as a single integrated identity rather than a sum of ingredients.

Why does páramo water matter?

The páramo is an ecosystem unique to the tropical Andes, where water filters through frailejones and mosses. In Pícaro it is not a secondary component. Its purity and mineral content bring balance and texture, and shape part of the spirit's structure.

Is Pícaro Gin craft-made?

It is produced in 150-litre micro-batches, in copper stills, with every botanical worked separately. The process is manual and painstaking, built on rigorous technical control at each stage, and among the most demanding in the category.

Has Pícaro Gin won any awards?

A Silver Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2025, in its first entry into international competition. The panel judges blind, without knowing brand or origin.

How to drink it

How should Pícaro Gin be served?

In a Gin & Tonic, with ice to the brim, a Mediterranean-style tonic, a pink grapefruit wheel and a sprig of rosemary clapped between the palms to release its essence. It also holds up to slow tasting, where a single drop of water opens up its inner architecture.

Which tonic works best with Pícaro Gin?

A clean, Mediterranean-style tonic with low sugar, one that carries the spirit's citrus-floral core without covering it. Tonics with a dominant bitterness, like Indian tonic water, flatten the orchid instead of accompanying it.

Does Pícaro Gin work in a Negroni?

Yes. It is made like the classic, in equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and Campari, with a single change. Pink grapefruit peel takes the place of orange and draws the bitterness toward the citrus side of the spirit.

The house

Why is it called Pícaro?

The name comes from the curiosity and restless spirit that led the house to travel Colombia in search of something worth distilling. That journey reached the Páramo del Duende, one of the most remote corners of the Andes, where a cunning, mischievous and quick duende is said to guard the secrets of the natural sanctuary. That mischief gave the gin its name.

Who makes Pícaro Gin?

Pícaro Gin is a brand of Casa Duque, a Colombian house of spirits and hospitality.
